How to Tell if Your Paint is Compatible

How to Tell if Your Paint is Compatible

Paint compatibility entails your paints ability to actually adhere to older coats of alkyd or oil-based paint. When you're trying to use a water-based latex paint to paint over more than three or four coats of old alkyd or oil-based paint, the adhesion can prove to be minimal, which causes flaking and "lift off." Rob Hooft, a structural chemist with a PhD in molecular modeling and X-ray diffraction sums it up best,

"There are two steps in the process: first the wet paint must stick to the wall, then it dries.

The sticking is caused by adhesion. This effect is caused by molecules in the wall and in the paint liking the fact that they are together. Adhesion is very general in liquids (it causes you to get wet in the rain) and there are only rare cases of molecules that prevent sticking (these are used in anti-stick coatings of e.g. frying pans).

After the adhesion the paint dries. This is often a process whereby a liquid evaporates and air changes a binder in the paint to bind its molecules together. Now the paint layer becomes very strongly tied together and resistant.

Since walls are porous, the liquid paint will actually partly go into the wall. This helps also to make the dried paint become strongly attached. If you have a very hard surface, sometimes the dry paint layer can be scratched off because the paint attaches very strongly to itself, but much less strongly to the covered surface."'

With those elements in mind, paint compatibility is very important when attempting to paint over or repaint an object. The best solution is to completely remove the existing layer of paint, but falling short of that, repainting using another coat of alkyd or oil-based paint is the best solution. Cleaning, sanding, and spot-priming are always good precautionary steps before repainting with a top quality latex exterior paint.

Propane Tank Refinishing Solutions

Propane Tank Refinishing Solutions

Propane tank refinishing is the best way to protect your investment from the elements. Rust, corrosion, and weather-related imperfections inevitably begin to arise, increasing potential for rot and rendering your propane tanks useless. Propane tank coatings are the best way to prolong the life of your tanks while maintaining a clean look. H-I-S Coatings offers a few different, proprietary solutions for Propane Storage Tank refinishing and manufacturing operations. Our scientifically formulated coatings are highly corrosion and UV light resistant. While most coating products follow the same rule of them, higher quality, harder to install, we have made sure that we've created a product that is user friendly and gives you a perfect finish every time. We offer everything from DTM Urethanes to Isocyanate Free Acrylic Enamels. Our sales teams are standing by to make sure that you get the perfect coating products that conform to your environmental, regulatory, and performance based requirements.

Fixing Poor Scrub and Stain Resistance

Poor scrub resistance, poor stain resistance. You know you've got an issue, but you're not exactly sure what's causing it and more importantly, how to fix it. Scrub resistance is the tendency of paint to mimic something around it as you paint. It leaves a small impression in the paint that ruins the job you're trying to do. Stain resistance means that your paint is more prone to absorbing dirt and grime, which can cause the paint to become seemingly permanently dirty and grimy. The main cause of both of these issues is the use of a low-quality paint that is porous in nature. This can also happen when you're using paint without a primer or not waiting long enough between coats. At this point, you may be about ready to give up, having exhausted every option that you can think of.

Luckily, H-I-S has been experts in the paint industry for a very, very long time and we can help you fix this mess that you're in so that the project turns out perfect.

Symptoms & Remedies:

POOR SCRUB RESISTANCE: Tendency of the paint film to take on the imprint of an object that is placed on it (e.g., a shelf, table, windowsill or countertop with books, dishes and other objects on them).

POSSIBLE CAUSES: Use of low-quality semi-gloss or gloss paint. Putting a painted surface back into use before the paint has fully dried.

SOLUTION: Use top quality acrylic semi-gloss or gloss latex paint. Low-quality latex semi-gloss and gloss paints can have poor print resistance, especially in warm, damp conditions. Acrylic latex paints generally have better print resistance than vinyl latex paints. Fully cured alkyd paints also have excellent print resistance. Make sure the recommended "cure" time is allowed for the paint before it is put into service. Cool or humid conditions require more curing time.

POOR STAIN RESISTANCE: Failure of the paint to resist absorption of dirt and stains.

POSSIBLE CAUSES: Use of lower quality paint that is porous in nature. Application of paint to un-primed substrate.

SOLUTION: Higher quality latex paints contain more binder, which helps prevent stains from penetrating the painted surface, allowing for easy removal. Priming new surfaces provide the maximum film thickness of a premium top coat, providing very good stain removability.

Commercial Contractor’s Best Friend in 2017

For the commercial paint contractor, the old adage is true, “Time is Money.” Imagine going into a paint supply store, spending an hour waiting for the minimum wage employee in charge of the front desk to find their manager and ask where the supplies you desperately need to finish out the job are. Imagine at the end of that hour the anxiety that comes when they don’t have everything that you need or they’ve managed to mess up even the simplest order. When time is your money when what you make in an hour is entirely dependent on how well and how quickly you can finish a job, time matters.
